Field account
The first sign was an extra shadow. The Veil Stalker unfolded from a scrap of torn canvas, tall as a gate and thin as smoke pulled beneath a door. Its arms arrived before its head, and its face never settled into a single shape. It was not invisible. It was unfinished wherever attention failed, and the missing parts could cross more distance than the parts anyone watched.
Observed behavior
The Stalker trails groups long enough to learn who checks the rear and whose concentration breaks under stress. It creates one distraction, waits until several heads turn together, and folds through the unwatched interval toward whoever has become isolated.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
The group casts one more shadow than it has bodies.
Torn cloth moves behind a cairn despite completely still air.
A companion's footfalls continue for one step after everyone stops.
