The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The chalk pillar unfolded only after a traveler crossed the curve. Slate plates opened into shoulders, iron hinges straightened into arms, and a painted chevron became a red, lidless eye. The Hairpin Bastion did not pursue. It occupied the bend and made every alternative worse, turning scree, slope, road spikes, and the quarry wall into extensions of a boundary built to judge passage.
Observed behavior
A Bastion wakes when someone crosses its inherited line or violates a carved rule. It chooses a lane, closes detours, and uses the slope to return intruders to its chosen ground. A traveler who retreats in order is often allowed to leave; a false token is treated as deliberate fraud.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Fresh bolt heads show beneath decades of lichen on a roadside pillar.
Loose scree forms clean chevrons pointing back down the pass.
Every cracked survey post on the bend leans toward the same stone figure.

Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.

Find the old boundary
The Bastion cannot willingly cross the outermost surviving survey sockets. Locate the line before trying to overpower the guardian.

Starve the mechanism
Soft footwork, packed clay, and heavy cloth reduce the vibration feeding its joints and create time to wedge the plates.
