Tideglass Kraken

The tide pool broke into panes holding different moons. Arms moved inside the water like veins in green glass. Our skiff rose with no wave beneath it. A tentacle crossed the deck and passed through the mast. Two polished halves slid apart. Eyes opened along the arm, showing us moments we hadn't lived. Then the bay tilted toward the mouth.

We broke every lantern. The false moons vanished and the Kraken hesitated. Below it, the Reef Colossus caught an arm in one stone hand. Their struggle changed the cove. No chart agrees on the depth now.

Watch the water before looking for a body. The Kraken tests reflections and lifts transparent walls, drawing loose objects toward a hidden center. Repeated lights offer more approaches. Resistance brings glass arms that isolate prey while the spaces between them flood.

Darkness overwhelms its possible futures. Chaotic scattered light gives it too many. A severed tentacle may choose its own movements for several minutes and attack either side. Dry sand abrades the central mantle's pressure-slick skin enough to make the creature retreat.
