Tideglass Kraken

Field account

The tide pool shattered before the Kraken surfaced. Water rose in panes, each holding a different moon, and long arms moved inside them like veins in green glass. Our skiff lifted without a wave beneath it. Then the first tentacle crossed the deck. It did not strike; it passed through the mast and left two polished halves sliding apart. Eyes opened all along the slick inner curve, reflecting us from moments we had not yet lived. The creature pulled, and the bay tilted toward its central mouth. We escaped by breaking every lantern at once. A hundred false moons vanished. The Kraken hesitated among the dark reflections, enough for the Reef Colossus below to close one stone hand around an arm. Their struggle remade the cove. No chart agrees on its depth now.

Observed behavior

A Kraken first changes water before revealing flesh. It tests reflections, raises transparent walls, and draws loose objects toward an unseen center. It is attracted to repeated lights because each reflection offers another possible approach. When resisted, the creature isolates prey with glass arms and floods the gaps between them. Darkness overwhelms its many futures, while chaotic scattered light creates too many. Severed tentacles continue choosing motions for several minutes and may attack either side. The Kraken retreats if its central mantle touches dry sand, which abrades its pressure-slick skin.
