Reef Colossus

Field account

We mistook its shoulder for the outer reef until the lighthouse beam crossed a row of barnacled knuckles. Then the whole horizon stood up. Boats slid from its back like toys from a listing shelf. The Colossus walked toward the seawall, each step drawing the bay away from shore before returning it as a crushing wall. In its chest, behind coral ribs, an old harbor bell swung without a rope. Every toll woke smaller shapes from the reef: crabs in helmet shells, drowned figureheads, masonry hands. Cannon fire only planted more iron in its hide. We stopped it by opening the abandoned ship channel and ringing the quarantine bell inland. The fortress turned toward the older claim and followed that sound into deep water. It is still walking somewhere beyond the lantern line.

Observed behavior

The Colossus does not chase individuals. It identifies a structure, channel, or shoreline as contested ground and conducts a siege until the claim is resolved. It advances on a tidal cadence, withdrawing water before each step and weaponizing the return. Bells, plaques, and foundation stones attract its attention because they signify authority. Destroying surface growth achieves little; living coral rebuilds around new debris. If presented with an older and more convincing boundary, it may redirect. Once turned, however, it completes the new march before reconsidering anything.
