Reef Colossus

The lighthouse beam found knuckles on the outer reef. Then the reef stood up. Boats slid off its shoulder.

As the Colossus walked toward the seawall, each step pulled the bay away and sent it back as a wall of water. A harbor bell swung without a rope behind the coral ribs. Its toll woke smaller shapes: crabs wearing helmet shells, figureheads from wrecks, hands made of masonry. Cannon fire gave it more iron for its hide.

We opened the abandoned ship channel and rang the inland quarantine bell. It turned toward the older claim and followed it into deep water. Beyond the lantern line, it is still walking.

Individuals aren't the target. It besieges contested shoreline or a structure or channel until the claim is resolved. The advance keeps tidal time, drawing water away before each step. Bells and foundation stones signal authority to it; plaques can too. Removing surface growth achieves little because the coral rebuilds around new debris.

An older, more convincing boundary can redirect it. Once redirected, it finishes the new march before reconsidering.
