Galefin Manta

Field account

We saw its shadow racing over the wheat before anyone thought to look above. The Galefin was almost invisible against the storm shelf, a broad gray manta swimming through air with lazy strokes. Torn ribbons of wind streamed from its fins. It dipped, clipped the brass weathercock from the chapel, and climbed before the vane struck earth. The second pass opened two wagon covers from end to end. On the third, we understood it was not attacking us; it was shaving loose objects from the convoy to learn which way our fear would scatter. We lashed every canvas, joined arms, and turned the wagons into one blunt shape. Denied an edge, the creature skimmed so low its belly lanterns lit our faces, then rode the cold front east.

Observed behavior

The manta probes the outline of a group. It cuts straps, removes hats, snaps poles, and tests which member separates to recover them. A true strike follows only when the formation develops a thin edge. It turns by folding one fin and borrowing nearby wind, so abrupt dead air can force a clumsy descent. Galefins are curious about kites and spinning vanes; experienced travelers use both to read their approach. They dislike enclosed courtyards, dense forests, and smoke that makes pressure layers visible. A wounded specimen seeks the nearest storm rather than shelter.
