After the rain
The rain was over. Blue light was still moving beneath the grate.
Water climbed between the bars as the eel surfaced through a cracked curb, black runoff braided with lightning. A thin luminous thread reached from each puddle to the next.
Connected water
The eel lives in the drainage system. Clear weather changes nothing below the road. Before striking, it sends test arcs through connected puddles. It can electrify one route and surface from a different culvert, extending its reach through metal debris. Shut it in a single pool and its body shortens. It circles the deepest point.

Signs of its presence
Blue threads join puddles across dry gaps. Water runs uphill toward a flashing grate.
Loose cart wheels and sign bolts twitch toward the drains.

Break the waterline
Lay a continuous strip of dry, raised material across the connection. The eel must leap the break, visibly and without steering.

Confine one pool
Block every outlet. The long current contracts into a dense coil that nonconductive material can hold.
