Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The Exhaustback Raccoon emerged beneath a truck carrying a warm battery clamp in deft black paws. Vent tubes pulsed along its spine. When cornered, it arched and filled the road with oily exhaust where three false bodies became six, though only one set of fingers worked the latch on the food box. Exhaustbacks steal heat before food, and every pursuit feeds the furnace that conceals the next theft.
Observed behavior
It scouts camps, carts, and idle machinery for warm parts it can carry. Discovery triggers smoke, false silhouettes, and a fast retreat through drains. Water clogs the vents and weighs down the fur, but a trapped animal may overheat rather than abandon its cache.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Small black handprints appear around warm engine housings and battery boxes.
Drain grates exhale oily smoke in short animal breaths.
Filters and rubber strips have been woven into nests beneath parked vehicles.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Clog the vents
A thorough soaking mats oily fur into the spinal tubes, preventing the smoke screen and forcing the animal to shed heat slowly.
02
Offer warmer metal
A heated bolt or clamp on a clear line can draw the creature away from its drain and across exposed ground.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
A hunched raccoon-like body is reshaped around a raised back and an arcing exhaust structure.
02
Detail studies
The plate emphasizes the heavy forequarters, masked face, and plume rising from the spine.
