Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The crater had teeth. We saw them only when the stars vanished above its rim, each light bending downward into a mouth wider than the farmhouse buried at its center. The Devourer's body folded inward around that hunger: black limbs, meteor spines, glassed earth stretched like hide. It did not climb from the impact site. The impact site stood up. Gravity leaned with it. Our lanterns dragged sparks toward its throat, and loose stones rolled uphill in pursuit. When the creature bit, the sound came first and the wound in the world followed. We escaped by throwing the star compass into an empty well. The instrument insisted down was elsewhere. For a moment the Devourer's appetite turned upon its own shadow, and the crater collapsed around it like a closing eye.
Observed behavior
The Devourer advances by redefining where falling ends. It tilts loose matter toward itself, tests structures with localized weight, and bites whichever anchor resists longest. Light attracts attention but substantial mass sustains it. The creature does not distinguish prey from terrain; a fortified refuge simply offers a denser mouthful. Conflicting directional forces confuse its central hunger, especially instruments or rituals asserting another down. After feeding heavily, it enters a brief collapse in which the outer body folds inward to compress what was taken. That is the closest it comes to vulnerability.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Stars near the horizon bend toward one patch of ground.
Loose stones roll uphill while hanging objects lean the same way.
Distances measured toward the crater shorten between readings.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Contrary Gravity
Competing directional laws divide its appetite and can turn the Devourer's own weight against its body.
02
Post-Feeding Collapse
While compressing a major meal, the folded outer mass exposes the dense starless core.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Star-black mass with a crater-mouth, broken meteor spines, and a body folding inward toward a central hunger.
02
Material detail
Void-dark tissue, glassed stone, meteor iron, pale star motes, pressure seams, and teeth set in impossible arcs.
