Field account
The courthouse clock struck thirteen and everyone in the square repeated their previous gesture. Everyone except the Regent. He descended the tower stair in a robe of overlapping brass, gear-crown turning around an enamel face that showed no hour we recognized. Long hands adjusted people as he passed: a shoulder half an inch left, a dropped paper returned to the air, a heartbeat postponed. His automata marched from stopped clocks, carrying warrants dated tomorrow. We tried to rush him. The street skipped. Suddenly our charge had already failed, and the Regent was winding a spring inside Mara's shadow. I jammed the tower mechanism with the Nightglass shard at noon. One clock told a time the others could not reflect. His perfect sequence stuttered, and for seven ungoverned seconds the city belonged to chance.
Observed behavior
The Regent observes before correcting. Small irregularities receive subtle adjustments: a repeated step, a delayed word, a door closing early. Open resistance prompts gear lanes and automaton bailiffs, all acting on a visible sequence. It predicts disciplined opponents more easily than chaotic ones and can exploit a planned assault by editing one crucial interval. Multiple contradictory clocks divide its attention. The Regent bargains through appointments and deadlines; it keeps every agreed time exactly, including ambiguities. When defeated, it attempts to appoint a successor mechanism rather than flee.
