Fenwrath Ape

Field account

In the fen it wore peat-black fur, reed tassels, and shoulders plated with turtle shell. I have since seen the same anger wearing desert thorn and quarry lichen. The body changes; the posture does not. It squats at the edge of an anomaly with both fists sunk into local ground, as if holding the landscape by its roots. When we crossed the square glyphs floating above the water, the Ape pulled. Half the fen rose with it. Mud, drowned logs, and our own footprints gathered around its arms. It struck once, and the world decided we had always been standing closer together. We survived by retreating beyond the glyph line without running. The creature watched us go, moss steaming from its back. Behind it, the disturbed reeds reset into perfect rows.

Observed behavior

The Ape establishes a visible or intuitive perimeter and ignores activity beyond it. Crossing triggers escalating corrections: displaced soil returns, tracks converge, then the intruder is physically driven back. It attacks the largest disturbance rather than the weakest body. Tools that move earth draw special hostility. Retreat made slowly along one's original path is often permitted; frantic movement creates more variance to correct. The creature can borrow mass from local terrain, so burning, draining, or blasting the habitat only arms it. Unfamiliar material brought from elsewhere resists incorporation for a short time.
