Fenwrath Ape

In the fen it wore peat-black fur with reed tassels. Turtle shell plated its shoulders. I've seen that anger since in desert thorn and quarry lichen. The body changes with the region. The posture stays: both fists sunk into local earth at the edge of an anomaly.

We crossed the square glyphs above the water. It pulled, and half the fen rose. Drowned logs gathered around its arms with mud and our own footprints. One strike moved us closer together, as though we'd always stood there. We backed along our approach without running. It watched, moss steaming on its back. Behind it the reeds reset into perfect rows.

It ignores what happens outside its perimeter, whether that boundary is visible or only felt. Crossing starts a sequence of corrections. Displaced earth returns, tracks converge, and finally the intruder is driven out. The largest disturbance draws the attack, not the weakest body. Earth-moving tools provoke particular hostility.

Slow retreat along the original route is often allowed. Frantic movement creates more for it to correct. Burning or blasting the habitat supplies its borrowed mass; draining it can do the same. Material brought from elsewhere resists incorporation briefly.
