Sootwing Harrower

Field account

The charcoal burners blamed lightning, though the day had been cloudless. Three men had vanished from the ridge camp, leaving only boots, flattened cookfires, and soot printed in the shapes of wings. We watched from the laurel until noon. Nothing moved above us except a single clean window in the smoke. That emptiness was the trick. The Harrower folded out of it without sound, all chitin ribs and torn membranes, its feathers burning backward into black dust. It struck the last man in line and climbed with him before his shadow reached the ground. When it returned, I threw my coat into the smoke and saw the ash bend around a body that light refused to name. We fired at the absence. The thing screamed like a shovel dragged across a cold stove and abandoned its second dive.

Observed behavior

A Harrower studies marching order, wind direction, and who looks upward. It prefers the final traveler, a separated scout, or anyone burdened by another body. Before striking, it circles inside smoke until its falling ash reveals every current. The first dive is meant to carry prey away; later passes harry rescuers from changing angles. It will not cross heavy rain unless starving. Bright flame distracts juveniles, but elders recognize bait and attack the hand holding it. Wounded Harrowers flee downwind, shedding a false silhouette as they go.
