Sootwing Harrower

Three charcoal burners had vanished. The camp held their boots, flattened cookfires, and soot shaped like wings. The others blamed lightning on a cloudless day.

We waited in the laurel until noon. One clear patch stayed inside the smoke. The Harrower folded out of that emptiness without a sound, chitin ribs inside torn membranes, feathers burning backward to black dust. It took the last man in line and climbed before his shadow reached the ground. On its return I threw my coat into the plume. Ash bent around the hidden body. We fired there. It screamed like a shovel dragged over a cold stove and gave up the second dive.

Before hunting, it studies the wind and marching order. It notices who looks up. The last traveler is favored, or a separated scout; someone carrying another body is also vulnerable. It circles inside smoke until falling ash reveals the currents, then dives to take its prey away. Later passes come at rescuers from changing angles.

Heavy rain keeps it out unless it is starving. Young birds are distracted by bright flame. Elders recognize the bait and strike the hand. A wounded Harrower flees downwind under a shed false silhouette.
