Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The city lit from the ground up. First came blue veins in flooded streets, then hotel signs, traffic lamps, and dead windows blazing in an order too deliberate for power. The Gridspire Conductor rose where the substation had stood. Its ribs were cable loops. Its arms ended in bent utility poles, and the transmission tower along its back scraped sparks from the clouds. With each conducting gesture, electricity traced a new lane through water and rebar. Small maintenance drones climbed from transformer boxes, wearing ceramic masks like blank faces. The Conductor made them sing in relay clicks. We could not approach because the streets themselves had become notation. Lio finally found the rest: an unlit evacuation map painted beneath the flood. We moved against the score, stepping only on routes the old city had marked for powerlessness. When the Conductor noticed the silence, it lowered every arm. The entire skyline answered.
Observed behavior
The Conductor perceives streets as measures and functioning devices as instruments. It begins by testing isolated circuits, then draws them into repeating sequences that predict and constrain movement. Resistance is incorporated as percussion; a repeated attack becomes part of the next electrical pattern. The entity favors flooded downtown corridors where water, rebar, signage, and towers create overlapping paths. It cannot tolerate unscheduled silence. Dead zones, hand-painted routes, and mechanical tools outside the old grid provoke disproportionate attention because they do not appear in its score. During a major storm it performs toward the clouds, briefly neglecting ground targets while preparing a citywide closing gesture.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Dead traffic lights cycling in patterns that repeat footsteps.
Utility poles leaning toward the same distant substation.
Relay clicks traveling through flooded rooms like a song rehearsal.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Unmapped Dead Route
Paths created after the old grid failed do not appear in its internal score and cannot carry its broad patterns.
02
Broken Rhythm
Irregular actions deny it predictive timing and prevent repeated resistance from becoming part of its performance.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Vertical conductor figure with cable ribs, a tower-spine, and arms shaped like bent power poles.
02
Material detail
Chrome, concrete dust, neon fragments, wet cable insulation, exposed copper, and electrical burn marks.
