Caldera Wyrm

Field account

By the time we reached the rim, the mountain had begun breathing. Each exhalation lifted a red curtain through the cracks, and the old survey chains lay pooled like candle wax. The Wyrm occupied the caldera below, coiled around the lava lake with the slow assurance of a creature resting inside its own heart. Obsidian plates rose along its spine like ruined chapels. When it opened its throat, I saw no tongue, only descending chambers of fire. It bit the cliff beneath us rather than our bodies. Half the rim gave way. We ran across falling stone while ash shapes clawed themselves upright in our footprints. The beast never hurried. That was the terror of it: the certainty that gravity, heat, and every road down the mountain were already serving its appetite.

Observed behavior

The Wyrm thinks territorially and at the pace of geology. It first redirects paths with minor collapses, then tests intruders through ashspawn and isolated heat vents. Direct violence begins only after something approaches the central lake, removes volcanic glass, or interrupts a long-established tribute. In battle it divides ground into survivable and doomed lanes, forcing motion before delivering its bite. It remembers insults through dormancy. Music played on stone pipes can hold its attention, but false notes provoke an eruption. Flight does not promise safety; heated columns carry its reach into the clouds.
