Sinkhole Gullet

Field account

The parking deck did not collapse. It swallowed. Concrete tilted inward around a black circle, cars sliding nose-first while rebar bent like grass toward the center. Then the Gullet climbed out of the hole it had made. Its front was a mouth wider than a hotel elevator, ringed with wet teeth that continued up the shoulders and into every joint. Behind that came a squat body burdened with slabs of floor, utility pipe, and bathroom tile pressed into its hide. It struck the deck with both forelimbs and another circle opened beneath our rear guard, connected to the first by a throat no survey could have allowed. Rusk threw a neon sign into the nearer mouth. The transformer burst inside it. For a moment the creature vomited blue light, and every false hole around us became ordinary cracked concrete. We ran before it remembered how to be architecture.

Observed behavior

A Gullet waits beneath load paths: elevator cores, parking ramps, hotel lobbies, and bridge approaches. It creates a minor sag or visible crack, then measures what comes to inspect it. Once enough weight gathers, the creature opens several false mouths and drives prey between them by heaving the floor. It is brutish only after surfacing; underground, its choices show patient structural intelligence. Loud machinery attracts it, while evenly distributed light foot traffic may pass unnoticed. Gullets dislike suspended structures they cannot incorporate and will not willingly cross deep open water. A feeding specimen grows increasingly literal, biting whatever occupies the darkest circle in view.
