Field account
The old causeway ran six miles over open water and had not seen a car in fourteen years. Halfway across, the guardrail began pacing us. Posts lifted in sequence, chrome flashing below the weeds, and something lean slid between them without entering the road. The Prowler showed itself only when Hask stepped around a washout. Four wet paws touched down on the yellow line; its spine was a flexible cable, its shoulders plated in bent reflector metal, and its long jaw carried fragments of lane marker like white teeth. It rushed him, cut behind the median, and appeared three car lengths ahead before his cry had finished. We survived by dropping both rail sections into the bay. Deprived of its hidden run, the beast hesitated on naked asphalt. In that heartbeat it looked less like a monster than an animal suddenly stranded between two impossible seas.
Observed behavior
A Prowler treats any strong line as a concealed road: a guardrail, cable run, painted stripe, balcony edge, or even a hard moon-shadow. It probes from parallel cover, clips the slowest traveler, and returns to its line before a counter can land. The animal avoids direct contests and abandons prey that reaches broad, irregular ground. Packs are uncommon, but mated pairs hunt opposite sides of the same causeway and trade targets at breaks in the median. Metallic tapping excites them because it resembles a loose reflector in traffic wind. They stop completely when all visible lines are interrupted, scanning for a new route with twitching cable whiskers.
