Shockscale Drakeling

Field account

A crown of neon buzzed above the flooded intersection. We thought the sign was shorting until it unfolded wings. The Drakeling was no larger than a riding bike, plated in scales stiff as transformer fins, its tail wrapped twice around the utility pole. Every puddle below reflected a different posture: wings spread, jaws open, body already in flight. When Pell raised his rifle, the creature clicked its throat and the reflections discharged first. Current ran through the water in branching blue streets, fencing us into the bus shelter. The Drakeling never descended. It shifted charge from sign to cable to rebar, tightening the pattern whenever we moved. I broke a ceramic sink from the rubble and held it overhead. Pell crossed beneath that dead white island, cut the pole's copper bond, and the little tyrant fell with a cry like a car alarm drowning in surf.

Observed behavior

A Drakeling rules from height and treats the surfaces below as a diagram. It charges puddles, exposed wire, and rebar in patterns that funnel intruders toward a favored perch. Rather than pursue, it changes the circuit and waits for movement to complete the trap. The creature is vain about bright signage and often rearranges functioning neon into a crude crown around its nest. Ceramic objects puzzle it because they interrupt both current and reflection. When grounded unexpectedly, its rigid scales limit movement and it scrambles for height with embarrassing desperation. Two Drakelings meeting at one grid boundary perform elaborate aerial arcs before the weaker yields its brightest sign.
