What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The sawgrass bowed in a narrow line ahead of us, though the evening wind blew crosswise. Something ran inside that line. We glimpsed knees too high for a person and arms trailing into long translucent blades, the body missing wherever moonlight touched water. The Shadekin passed Aster without slowing. His shirt stayed whole for two breaths, then opened along seven perfect green cuts. We formed back-to-back and made ourselves an island, which was exactly what it wanted. The grass around us leaned outward, preparing a hundred straight shadow roads. I remembered the burn crews and struck my pole flat through the reeds, tangling their silhouettes before the ghost could choose one. It hit the bent patch and surfaced waist-high, face a bundle of pale stalks tied with swamp hair. Aster cast our old lantern into the water. Broken reflections crossed every grass shadow, and the Shadekin fled shrieking through paths that no longer agreed.
Observed behavior
A Shadekin runs the perimeter of a group until anxiety pulls everyone close, then combs surrounding grass into straight lanes and cuts through the resulting enclosure. It favors straps, knees, and hands holding navigation tools, crippling movement rather than lingering to feed. The ghost loses confidence in tangled reeds and broken reflections, where shadow paths intersect without continuity. It often repeats a victim's last direction in a whisper from several points at once. Freshly flattened trail can halt a pursuit, but the Shadekin will wait at the first upright grass beyond it. Rain dims the creature without slowing it.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
A single line of grass bending against the wind.
Clean cuts appearing after clothing has already been passed.
Travel directions whispered from several reed beds at once.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Tangled Silhouette
Braided or flattened sawgrass denies the continuous blade shadows required for its fastest movement.
02
Crossed Reflection
Multiple ripples divide its moonwater passage and force the pale reed-face briefly into view.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Distinct rift creature silhouette with one obvious anatomical hook tied to the name; lean, fast, low-commitment shape with limbs built for sudden changes of direction.
02
Material detail
Transparent edges, torn afterimages, bone or fabric fragments, and light passing through missing places.
