Saltreed Needlefish

At low tide the reeds along the channel turned white. We blamed salt until one blinked. The Needlefish stood on its tail in knee-deep water, long jaw pointed at the sky, its narrow fins spread like reed leaves. Fifty other white stalks surrounded it, any of them perhaps another animal. When Mora stepped between channels, the fish vanished downward and came out of the next pool as a silver line. It crossed the air between us, jaw punching through her pack, then buried itself upright in mud and became a reed again. We stretched the cast net crosswise, waist high. On its second launch the creature could not turn; its salt-stiff fins caught every knot. It thrashed hard enough to ring the net weights, flashing needle light across the mangroves. Mora cut the jaw free and shoved it back into water. The fish fled, leaving a wake no wider than a knife score.

Observed behavior

A Needlefish hides vertically and waits for prey to cross a gap between connected pools. It commits to a single straight launch, passes through or pins the target, and buries its nose in the next mudbank to disappear again. The fish cannot turn sharply while airborne, so it prefers lanes framed by reeds and roots. Several may coordinate by flashing their scales underwater, taking sequential shots along the same crossing. Vibration through a taut transverse net often deters them, while splashing draws attention. A wounded Needlefish seeks the saltiest pocket available and stands motionless until mineral crust closes the wound.
