Hammock Murmurer

The leaves said our names before we found dry land. Palmettos rubbed out part of a syllable. Orchids breathed the rest, with roots knocking under the mud. At the island's center, two green jewel eyes watched from a cypress knot above a low throne of mangrove knees and fungal fans. Deer rested near spoonbills. A scarred boar lay among them without fear.

Our pursuers reached the water. The Murmurer sighed and every resident rose. Moss closed wounds. Roots carried the boar over ground too soft for our feet while orchid light gave the birds false targets. The island defended us.

Then, in my mother's voice, it asked us to leave our sick companion. His fever could feed a new root. We refused gently.

The hammock went silent.

It listens through roots, learning names and emotional debts from footfall. Threatened creatures are welcomed and mended. Leaf-speech coordinates their defense, with familiar voices and moving orchid light misleading attackers while residents strike from protected routes.

Help is tied to what a visitor promises. The Murmurer understands belonging as more permanent than most guests intend. Fire brings quick negotiation, but never an honest one. A guest can compel release by returning every accepted gift. Healed flesh is counted among the gifts.
