Field account

Summer remained outside the anomaly like a yellow wall. Inside, our breath fell as square white flakes. Rimehowl paced the orchard rows, more weather than animal: shoulders made from packed fog, paws crusted in blue ice, muzzle opening around a darkness colder than night. It did not chase. It barked once, and the sound froze between trees as a visible barrier. Mara crossed it and her next word shattered from her mouth. The second howl laid frost over our footprints, slowing every step that repeated them. We escaped by ringing mismatched handbells until the air filled with overlapping tones. The creature could freeze a rule carried by sound, but not decide which broken rhythm was the command. Behind us, apples remained suspended in clear ice, still green decades out of season.

Observed behavior

Rimehowl patrols a pattern and freezes violations rather than prey. Its first howl defines a boundary; later sounds specify what cannot cross, repeat, or continue. Travelers who vary pace and route give it fewer habits to seize. Repetition strengthens the frost, including repeated attacks, words, and rescue attempts. The elemental is drawn to bells and whistles because clear tones carry commands efficiently, but irregular overlapping sound confuses its selection. Heat alone causes steam that spreads the rule farther. Breaking the declared pattern is safer than directly thawing its result.
