Embercoil Serpent

Field account

The Serpent entered the substation as a red line no thicker than wire. Every warning glyph turned toward it. Then the line gathered sparks, oil heat, and summer stored in concrete until a jaw emerged around the current. It moved faster than flame, coiling through fence mesh and leaving square motes branded into steel. Each strike ended in a shower of harmless ash—except the ash was already flowing toward another hot surface. We chased three bodies before realizing there had only ever been one command using different fuel. I opened the rain tanks and flooded the trenches. Deprived of continuous heat, the Embercoil knotted itself around a ceramic insulator and cooled into a black spiral, still twitching whenever anyone spoke the word ignite.

Observed behavior

The Serpent circles the hottest available path, clips exposed targets, and abandons each temporary body before retaliation lands. It tests insulated gaps with sparks and uses machinery as both shelter and acceleration. Cooling one surface merely redirects it unless every connected heat route is interrupted. The creature is attracted to spoken or written ignition commands, which the System interprets as authorization. It avoids phase-change materials that absorb heat without passing it onward. Once trapped in an isolated object, it coils tighter as temperature falls and can be contained before the final ember escapes.
