The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The first tracks were pressed into red clay where a spring had boiled dry, each print holding a bead of orange glass. The Riftscale Salamander emerged broad as a church pew, furnace light moving beneath black scales. It did not strike the nearest body. It chose the heaviest structure in sight and tried to make the whole landscape fail around it.
Observed behavior
Weight provokes it more reliably than blood: wagon axles, hammering, footfalls, and collapsing masonry. It waits beneath mud or shallow water, then commits to long straight charges. Cooling rain makes it cautious, not harmless.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Rain hisses on stones that remain cool to the hand.
Five-toed tracks hold beads of fresh orange glass.
Creek water smells of pennies, wet brick, and sulfur.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.

Sustained running water pulls heat from the scale seams faster than the elemental core can replace it.

Its massive shoulders commit early. Lateral movement makes the longest rushes expensive and inaccurate.
