Brinejaw Shark

Field account

The pool was no bigger than a wagon bed, trapped between reef shelves after the tide withdrew. Still, something circled beneath its green surface. We saw the lantern glow first, two dim coins turning under mats of foam. Then the Brinejaw came through the limestone as though the rock were another depth of water. Salt plates rasped along its flanks. Its mouth opened sideways, too broad for the narrow body, and took the pack mule's shadow from the ledge. The animal followed an instant later. We drove iron spikes into the sunlit stone and stretched a sail between them. Denied our shadows, the shark thrashed half inside the reef, biting at reflections. It left when the tide returned, carrying the mule's bell somewhere below the earth where we could hear it ring for miles.

Observed behavior

A Brinejaw rarely attacks from open water while concealment remains available. It circles through reef, masonry, or overlapping shadows, testing prey with quick nips at reflected shapes. Once it takes a shadow, it can follow the owner across dry ground from below. The shark avoids broad noon light and surfaces dusted with fresh lime. Bells attract it because their vibration resembles struggling cartilage; coastal hunters sometimes bait one with a ringing buoy. Wounded animals retreat into stone and wait for pursuit, leaving only wet salt blooming along the route.
