Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The marquee read TONIGHT: ONE SHOW ONLY, though half its letters lay in weeds. Bulbs blinked along the empty frame and a tall figure bowed behind them. The Marquee Ghoul wore strips of old curtain and transparent skin full of trapped light. Every missing facial feature was replaced by a cracked bulb. It let us watch from the parking lot. Then the bulbs began going out from left to right, and with each darkness the figure stood closer without crossing the intervening ground. When the last lamp died, it came through our own shadows, jaw bright with filament teeth. We relit one fallen letter using a hand cell. The Ghoul turned toward the applause of that single glow and performed its retreat exactly as before. It is bound to an audience's expectation: entrance, strike, disappearance, encore. Refuse the sequence, and the monster loses its place.
Observed behavior
The Ghoul establishes a visible stage and invites observation before attacking. It advances only when a bulb goes dark or an audience collectively expects movement, making its approach seem instantaneous. A first strike is followed by retreat into curtains, sign shadows, or a false doorway, then an encore from a new angle. Unpredictable relighting disrupts the sequence. Turning backs calmly is safer than staring through the countdown, provided no reflective surface maintains an audience. The creature becomes frantic when people leave before the performance ends and may expose itself trying to regain attention.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Dead marquee bulbs relight one at a time without wiring.
A bowed figure appears only in the reflection of broken storefront glass.
Fallen sign letters rearrange themselves into invitations overnight.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Broken Sequence
Randomly lighting and extinguishing separate bulbs deprives the Ghoul of a reliable entrance cadence.
02
Audience Denial
Opaque screens, covered mirrors, and a calm collective departure leave it too insubstantial to pursue beyond the stage.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Distinct rift creature silhouette with one obvious anatomical hook tied to the name; compressed, predatory silhouette with concealment built into the outline.
02
Material detail
Transparent edges, torn afterimages, bone or fabric fragments, and light passing through missing places.
