TONIGHT: ONE SHOW ONLY. Half the letters were in the weeds. Bulbs blinked in the empty marquee and a tall figure bowed behind them, curtain strips hanging from transparent skin full of light. Cracked bulbs stood in for missing features.
We watched from the lot. The lights went out from left to right. At each one, the Ghoul was closer without crossing the ground. When the last died it came through our shadows, filament teeth bright in its jaw.
We relit a fallen letter with a hand cell. It turned toward that single glow and performed its retreat again.
Performance sequence
It makes a stage and invites an audience. Each darkening bulb permits an advance; so does a shared expectation that it will move. After striking it retreats into curtains or a sign shadow, sometimes a false doorway, before an encore from a new angle.
Relighting at unpredictable times breaks the sequence. Calmly turning away is safer than watching the countdown, if no reflection continues to provide an audience. Leaving before the end makes it frantic. It may expose itself trying to regain attention.

Broken Sequence
Light and extinguish separate bulbs unpredictably. It loses the reliable timing for an entrance.

Audience Denial
Use opaque screens and cover mirrors, then leave calmly together. Without an audience it is too insubstantial to pursue beyond the stage.
