Field account
The Gallowsvine Spitter looked like a rolled tire tangled in kudzu until it raised three thorn mouths from the ditch. Red roots dragged the body forward in short, wet pulls. Its first pod burst against our cart, spraying black sap and hooked seeds across the wheel. By the next breath, little vines had stitched spokes to axle. The second pod struck Maren's coat. Every hook tightened toward her throat, not enough to kill, only enough to hold her for the root network advancing under the clay. Spitters are the hunting shoots of a larger gallows colony, sent where hanging loops cannot reach. Their undersides are pale and slick; their upper stems mimic common roadside growth. Salt freed Maren, but the rooted body retreated through a storm grate before we could find the crown that had sent it.
Observed behavior
The Spitter hides low, targets wheels and feet first, then seeds clothing to delay prey while connected roots approach. It rarely closes on a moving target unless a pod has landed. Several specimens fire from different drainage openings and retreat along the same underground runner. Black sap marks everything they can sense, so throwing a coated object may divert the next volley. Once exposed on pavement, the creature seeks a grate, curb crack, or kudzu mass rather than fighting in place.
