Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The Atriumglass Marionette hung upright without a visible support, toes a handspan above the tile. Its limbs were framed in brass and broken skylight glass, each joint turning on a bolt salvaged from the mall railings. Hair-thin reflections rose from its wrists into the empty atrium. When a mannequin servant cracked, the Marionette drew one bright thread across the break and pulled it closed. When we advanced, those same threads caught in our reflections rather than our bodies, making arms lag behind intention. We smashed the mirror beside us and the strings went slack, but the puppet rebuilt the surface from loose shards. Only red clay stopped it. Smeared across the glass, clay gave the reflections weight, dragging threads to the floor. The Marionette serves whatever pattern the atrium remembers, repairing pieces and arranging bodies long after the original authority is gone.
Observed behavior
The Marionette remains behind sturdier allies, stitching breaks and repositioning them through reflective tethers. It lures intruders toward polished tile and multiplies small shards into a protective screen. Direct blows scatter glass but do not end the controlling pattern while intact reflections remain. Matte dust, cloth, darkness, and rough red clay deprive threads of clean attachment. The construct follows repeated routes compulsively; changing direction at irregular intervals can draw it into crossing and tangling its own lines.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Broken glass stands upright in human proportions without visible support.
Reflections move a fraction later than the bodies casting them.
Cracked mannequins are stitched with bright lines visible only in mirrors.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Matte Grounding
Clay, soot, or fabric over reflective surfaces gives its threads no image to seize and drags existing lines down.
02
Route Compulsion
Repeated feints along crossed paths make the Marionette reproduce the pattern until its own threads knot around the frame.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Uncanny object-like or bureaucratic figure, built around a ritual function more than natural anatomy; protective or ritual shape with satellites, attendants, growths, or carried focus objects.
02
Material detail
Stone, metal, glass, wood, bolt heads, seams, hinges, plates, and carved rule marks.
