Rootmaze Warden

Field account

We found the Warden standing waist-deep where the channel divided, broad as a boathouse door. Mangrove roots formed its legs and outer shield; inside them hung an old survey marker, a bronze hinge, and six lanterns burning underwater. It did not speak. One lantern turned green when our bow entered the left channel, then red when it saw the Glade Witch's pollen on our coats. The Warden planted both arms across the water. Roots rose behind us and the current stopped as if a gate had closed underground. Our guide tried the right fork. A prop root struck his canoe exactly where his earlier axe had scarred the bank. The thing remembered the wound. We gained passage only after binding living bark over the cut and surrendering the axe to its chest. The red lantern dimmed. The Warden opened one narrow corridor, not forgiveness, merely a route under observation.

Observed behavior

A Warden occupies a threshold and assesses passage through visible evidence: blood in water, cut roots, carried fire, invasive pollen, stolen eggs, or the lantern colors of another Warden. It rarely pursues beyond its channel. Instead, it blocks, diverts, and punishes approach through roots synchronized with current. Honest repair can change its judgment; apology alone cannot. The construct recognizes repeated travelers and may preserve a safe route for those who maintain banks or remove debris. It treats frantic retreat as proof that danger follows, often closing behind fugitives even when this traps their pursuers on the same side.
