Field account

The motel sign said VACANCY though no power reached the road. Inside, bougainvillea climbed every door but number twelve. The Bloom greeted us from the courtyard fountain: a woman-shaped trellis of orchid throats, key tags, and pale roots drinking from cracked tile. Her voice came through the air conditioners. She gave us clean water, closed our wounds with cool leaves, and sent little blossoms to keep watch at the windows. By morning, no one remembered why we had planned to leave. Our packs had rooted to the carpet. Room numbers appeared on our wrists in yellow pollen. I found door twelve behind three layers of vine and opened it to full noon. The Bloom screamed through every empty room at once. We carried each other out while its roots tried to remake the courtyard around us, generous to the last, offering breakfast, another night, and names for the children we had not yet agreed to become.

Observed behavior

A Vacancy Bloom welcomes before it controls. It offers water, shade, sleep, and protection tailored to whatever a traveler lacks, then reinforces routines that make departure feel unreasonable. Allied plants and resident creatures receive food, closed wounds, and hidden passages through the building. Threats are misdirected into repeating corridors or soothed until roots can secure them. The Bloom dislikes explicit checkout rituals, open exterior doors, and direct sunlight entering a room kept sealed since its birth. It never believes itself cruel. Even when attacking, it speaks in the language of service, apologizing for discomfort and promising the restraint will improve everyone's stay.
