Ledger encounter
The scout couldn't step toward us after the Scrivener wrote deserter beside his name. His body kept turning downhill.
It sat at a stump beneath the laurel shelf. Rain passed through its shoulders and pooled in the ledger. Strips on the branches carried names or roles: coward, debtor, daughter, thief. Bone fingers wrapped in clear skin tapered to pen points. We smeared the scout's strip with wet leaves. His shouted denials wrote it back.
When he calmly said what he'd actually done, the word split.
Binding practice
Arguments and introductions supply its language, along with official records. It watches, binds someone to a role, and uses that restriction to separate or misdirect the group. Broad denial strengthens the writing. Exact admissions and contradictions weaken it, even when the truth is unflattering. Paper strips defend the ledger by tightening around wrists or mouths and seizing trail markers. It would rather bargain for names than risk the archive.

Close the central ledger between two true statements about the Scrivener itself. It stays trapped inside until the cover is opened.
