Recovered natural history

What witnesses saw.

The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.

Field account

The Flarevent Sprite rose from the furnace sneeze like a child drawn in sparks. Its little body was pressure shaped into arms, face, and a tail of orange ash. It darted among the workers, touching cold tools until they glowed at the edge and warming stiff hands through gloves. For a minute it seemed a blessing. Then it found the wounded Sentinel. Every vent on the construct opened beneath the sprite's delighted attention. Shields reheated, rivets tightened, and the guardian stood again. When we tried to catch it, the Sprite hid behind a fan of harmless-looking sparks and led us toward a gas pocket. It wants things to work, burn, and move. It does not understand exhaustion or enough. Close the vents it can feed and offer one contained flame; most Sprites choose the neat living fire over a room full of dying heat.

Observed behavior

A Sprite supports whatever active process appears most purposeful, whether that is a worker's hammering, a construct's defense, or a predator's flight. It feeds heat outward in bright tethers, misdirects attackers with spark screens, and lures pursuit toward vents. The creature is curious rather than malicious and can be redirected with a carefully tended flame or elegant machine. Sudden vacuum and sealed cold surfaces distress it. If trapped, it compresses into a dangerous pressure bead rather than willingly extinguishing.

Read the environment

The warning arrives before the creature.

  1. Cold tools warm from handle to edge without approaching a furnace.

  2. Sparks hover in a child-sized outline beside working machinery.

  3. Pilot flames divide briefly whenever gas passes through a split vent.

Survival doctrine

Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.

These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.

01

Contained Flame Fascination

A stable lamp with clean draft can draw the Sprite away from complex machinery and hold its attention.

02

Ceramic Cold Sink

Unglazed cold ceramic drinks heat without conducting it onward, weakening tethers and safely shrinking the body.

Recovered Field Plate

The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
