Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The rust streak on the tank had shoulders. Once I saw them, the rest of the Lurker unfolded: a narrow head, long hands, and torn afterimages the color of old blood on iron. It waited until Sela leaned against the rail, then came through the corrosion beneath her palm. The metal failed at the same instant. She fell; the ghost followed, using the broken rail as a spray of orange cover. A Rustshade does not pass through sound iron. It inhabits neglect—the wet seam under a bolt, the hollow beneath a painted plate, the stain everyone has stopped inspecting. We drove ours into a polished wrench head by scraping every other rust patch with wire brushes. Trapped in that small surface, it could not stretch its arms. The safest rail in its territory is the one you have personally cleaned.
Observed behavior
The Lurker chooses a corroded support already likely to be trusted, waits for weight, then emerges with a sudden rear strike as the metal fails. It retreats into another rust patch rather than holding a solid body. Fresh abrasion drives it along the connected structure, allowing hunters to herd it by cleaning from several directions. Water spreads its possible refuge; oil denies it. The ghost avoids open stone and clean timber. When cornered in a small rusted object, it becomes dense enough to seize or destroy.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
A rust stain resembles a crouched figure when viewed from one angle.
Paint blisters over hand-shaped corrosion on load-bearing rails.
Orange flakes fall against the wind toward a person using metal support.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Bright-Metal Exile
Thorough scraping and oiling erase its habitat and can herd the entire spirit into one remaining object.
02
Broken Iron Continuity
Wooden wedges or removed bolts isolate rust patches, preventing escape between structural pieces.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Distinct rift creature silhouette with one obvious anatomical hook tied to the name; compressed, predatory silhouette with concealment built into the outline.
02
Material detail
Transparent edges, torn afterimages, bone or fabric fragments, and light passing through missing places.
