Briarhold Rootmother

We entered the Briarhold three miles before seeing her. Roots crossed the road like sleeping fingers. Green flames breathed inside thorn cages. Above the ruined manor, the Rootmother's trunk split around a warm hollow where small faces slept among seed pods. Black-briar antlers held pieces of the valley's old fences.

She called us children and knew the soil where each of us had been born. We refused shelter; the road rooted shut behind us. We accepted; vines entered our boot seams to test if we would stay. An orchard ledger proved the hill had once belonged to no house. Her claim loosened for one furious moment. We ran while the valley reached after us.

The offer comes before force: food and shelter, remembered names, a place in the household. Acceptance puts literal roots on the obligation. A courteous, immediate refusal can be safe. Damaging the hold wakes every connected plant.

She changes the ground with root walls and thorn lanes, budding temporary children out of buried grievances. Ordinary fire angers her. Only fire reaching the original nursery root frightens her. Documents proving older, unclaimed, or common ownership can interrupt her authority. Invented lineage becomes fertilizer.
