Recovered natural history

What witnesses saw.

The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.

Field account

The Cindercap Gremlin fit inside an ash hopper with room to grin. Living cinder brightened across its head whenever it imagined trouble. It had jammed the machinery not to stop the furnace, but to make the pressure release when the workers gathered. Gremlins rarely create power. They redirect heat, motion, and attention already present until every loose consequence feels like a weapon.

Observed behavior

A Gremlin studies a process, marks a person or machine with cinder, and waits for the moment when heat can be routed through it. Open vents, dropped ash, timed jams, and hot decoys control the room. A silent, depressurized workshop leaves the creature with almost nothing to command.

Read the environment

The warning arrives before the creature.

  1. Small glowing handprints appear on equipment scheduled to fail next.

  2. Useful wedges vanish while useless ones fill the tool drawers.

  3. Laughter inside the ash hopper matches the rhythm of an unstable belt.

Survival doctrine

Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.

These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.

01

Make the process cold

A fully cooled, depressurized workspace removes both its hazards and its hiding heat, leaving the Gremlin ordinary and visible.

02

Tempt the tinkerer

An elegant but incomplete mechanism can distract the creature into demonstrating the very failure point it planned to exploit.

Recovered Field Plate

The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.

01

Primary form

A small upright figure is nearly swallowed by a tall, layered cap and narrow hanging garments.

02

Detail studies

A bright circular point anchors the face or chest beneath the oversized headpiece.
