TRESPASS BY INTENT appeared backward across the traveler's shadow. Then the Judge arrived, a bronze bell moving where its face should have been.
There was no sound. With each step the air thickened. Speech slowed. The painted line underfoot began to feel like a wall.
Enforcement pattern
A charge may be written on a place as well as a person. Each peal makes its restriction more physical. Clear categories strengthen the judgment. Evidence that visibly contradicts the charge forces a revision; for a moment, the sentence separates from the bell and body. Its law reaches only as far as its resonance.
