Chalkrend Raptor

Field account

A Chalkrend Raptor lies flatter than any warm animal should, belly pressed to a shelf and hide powdered white by patient breathing. The specimen above Widow's Cut watched our mules for an hour without blinking. We noticed it only when a pale scrape on the wall opened into an eye. It came down headfirst, hind claws finding cracks while its foretalons spread for the handler's neck. The body is lean, practical, and horribly well matched to broken stairs: long tail for the turn, scarred chest for sliding, horned toes for braking. Its first strike failed when the mule reared. Rather than fight on level road, it kicked chalk into our faces and vanished up a drainage seam no person could use. Never follow that retreat. A raptor fleeing uphill is arranging the height for its second attempt.

Observed behavior

The raptor attacks from above or below the expected sightline, choosing whoever manages animals, rope, or light. It commits to one tearing descent, then uses dust and vertical terrain to reset rather than trading blows. A wounded specimen grows more cautious, scratching false slide marks into several seams before hiding beside the least convincing trail. It dislikes crowded ledges, where bodies deny its landing space. During nesting season a pair alternates attacks: one pressures travelers toward the wall while the other drops from the shelf directly overhead.
