Aurora Seraph

Seven curtains of color opened above the city. Between them descended the Seraph, as tall as the broadcast tower, aurora layered through hard white wings. Each window held a different eye. At our feet the shadows thinned, exposing what we'd hidden. It spoke no words. Each of us heard the rule we'd most feared was true.

Light figures knelt on the rooftops and marked lanes toward the plaza. Below them the Hollow court answered with darkness. We climbed the tower and put out its warning beacon, the city's only officially recognized star. The descending lines bent into weather. The Seraph remained. It looked at us and began to revise.

First it illuminates, making hidden structures and private contradictions visible in relation to one another. Radiant routes follow. Lesser witnesses are appointed, and the verdict arrives as a change in the environment. Resistance alone is not condemned. Incoherence is.

A demonstrated exception can revise the mandate. Pleading without evidence gives it more to illuminate. Its judgment needs recognized fixed witnesses: stars or towers, a beacon, a peak, even a name. Remove all of them and the law becomes diffuse aurora. That offers time to survive or argue, not a defeat.
