Breakwater Wrecker Crew

I counted five Wreckers and eight sets of footprints. They wore slickers patched with sailcloth and oyster tins, white stripes across their faces. Colored lines ran through the rocks. The crew tugged those instead of calling over the surf.

One hooked our mule. Two cut the cargo free while another slid down a barnacled cable carrying a sharpened buoy plate. They took the medicine, left the food, and greased our foreheads. At the old beacon's flash they scattered through prepared cuts in the seawall. Its light passed over the marks and moved on.

Their captain came back at low tide to apologize. Medicine counted as payment, she explained. Food was appetite. That didn't settle coastal debt.

Fine tension lines let them read movement from cover without exposing a lookout. In a fight they take away equipment and footing before touching a body. They work fast because a long struggle draws larger coastal predators. When the line captain cuts the white cord, they withdraw along routes prepared days in advance.

They respect useful expertise. A truthful warning about weather or a failing structure can make them pause. A lie about ownership is a particularly strong provocation. Their grease symbols mark debtors for beacon light; the consequences can be worse than a knife wound.
