Field account
They wore rain slickers patched with sailcloth and oyster tins, faces striped white against the glare. I counted five on the breakwater, but their footprints belonged to eight. The Wreckers communicated by tugging colored lines stretched through the rocks; no voice carried over the surf. One hooked our pack mule while two others cut the cargo free, and a fourth came sliding down a barnacled cable with a sharpened buoy plate. They could have killed us. Instead they took the medicine, left the food, and marked our foreheads with grease. That was when the old beacon flashed and the crew scattered into prepared cuts in the seawall. The Ledgerkeeper's light passed over our mark and moved on. Their captain returned at low tide to apologize. Medicine, she explained, counted as payment. Food counted only as appetite, and appetite did not settle coastal debt.
Observed behavior
Wreckers scout with fine lines tied between cover points, reading vibrations rather than relying on exposed lookouts. In conflict, they isolate packs, weapons, and footing before touching a body. Their attacks are swift because every prolonged struggle risks drawing greater coastal predators. A crew withdraws the moment its line captain cuts the white cord, often vanishing through routes prepared days earlier. They respect practical expertise and may pause for a truthful warning about weather or structure. Lying about ownership is the surest provocation. Wreckers mark debtors with grease symbols visible to beacon light, a punishment far more dangerous than any knife wound.
