Claymaw Hog

Field account

The Claymaw Hog rose from the drainage bank as if the earth had decided to charge. Wet red clay plated its cheeks and shoulders, baked hard around old scars. Both tusks carried curb chips and root fiber, and the mouth behind them was packed with clay instead of foam. It hit the shopping-cart barricade, gathered the frames across its chest, and drove them another twenty paces before shaking free. The animal's wake was a clean trench through the kudzu lot. Each time it wallowed, new mud climbed the scar seams and thickened its armor. We lured it onto sun-buckled blacktop, where the clay plates began cracking away from the hide. Even then it chose collision over retreat. Claymaws are not subtle, but a creature that commits completely to the shortest line can make the whole landscape participate in that line.

Observed behavior

A Claymaw approaches through ditch cover, then selects the straightest collision lane to the greatest perceived threat. It smashes barriers and carries debris forward, using the added mass as a battering front. After impact it seeks mud to renew cracked plates and works itself into a sustained frenzy if denied. The hog turns poorly on pavement but can pivot violently in soft clay by burying one forefoot. Loud metal attracts its first charge. Elevation, sharp lateral movement, and dry ground are the safest controls.
