Orders moved across the Foreman's sooted plates. The idle foundry obeyed. Slag heaps stood as workers, and vents opened in straight, glowing aisles. It held a work board in one hand. The hammer in the other was taller than a man.

Refuse, and your name went on the board. The hammer rose another notch. We swapped the hazard placards until its orders contradicted the safety marks inside its own chest. For a long second, it tried to comply with both.

The Foreman lays out work lanes and treats people as tasks to be completed. Refusal brings barriers, then slag workers. The hammer follows. Injury is recorded as improper labor; command is never blamed.

It trusts stamped authority and written procedure even when they disagree. A legitimate shutdown gives workers safer passage than open rebellion. Breaking machinery lets it call sabotage. Using the machinery's own controls to disable the process weakens that claim. Empty the board and it must invent work, whether any is needed or not.
