Field account

The Ashforge Foreman carried a work board in one hand and a hammer taller than a man in the other. Sooted plates formed an overseer's coat around its furnace body; scorched labels crawled over the iron whenever it issued an order. The orders were absurd only until the foundry obeyed them. WALK HOT LANE. LIFT UNSHIELDED. REPORT UNDER HAMMER. Slag heaps stood up as workers. Vents opened in straight glowing aisles. Every refusal added our names to the board and made the hammer rise another notch. The Foreman did not rage. It documented. We broke its authority by swapping the hazard placards until every command contradicted the posted safety marks built into its own chest. For one long second it tried to obey both systems. That was enough. The creature is an institution with an internal furnace: efficient, tireless, and convinced injury is evidence of improper labor rather than improper command.

Observed behavior

The Foreman defines work lanes, assigns targets as tasks, and uses the foundry to enforce completion. It escalates from barriers and slag workers to hammer judgment when orders are refused. The construct trusts written labels, posted procedures, and stamped authority even when they conflict. Workers following a legitimate shutdown sequence can move through its territory more safely than obvious rebels. Destroying machinery strengthens its claim of sabotage; disabling processes according to their own controls weakens it. When the board is empty, the Foreman must invent work, exposing cracks in its understanding of actual need.
