Cinderscour Harrower

Field account

The Cinderscour Harrower looked like a torn patch of night pinned above the furnace stack. Ragged wings held warped feathers around exposed chitin ribs, and sky-glass veins showed ember light where blood should have been. It let soot gather over those veins until even the glow disappeared. Then the foundry vented. The Harrower folded through the cinder plume and fell behind us without a wingbeat. Its talons struck first; the thunder of displaced air arrived after. When it climbed again, sparks followed the burned edges and made three false silhouettes in the smoke. We opened the quench sluice across the updraft. Steam stripped soot from the real body and weighed the feathers long enough for a clean shot. Watch the smoke above hot work. If one black patch holds its shape against the wind, the sky has already chosen a victim.

Observed behavior

The Harrower waits above a smoke source and selects someone separated by noise or poor visibility. It dives through cinders, strikes once, and uses the heated plume to regain height. Sparks along its wings create false flight lines during retreat. Steam and heavy rain reveal and burden the true body, while cold clean air denies lift. A wounded predator circles toward the hottest vent rather than its nest. Closing that vent may force it to land, but can also redirect furnace pressure dangerously through the site.
