The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
We mistook it for an abandoned scale house built into the quarry wall. The doorway stood open, ledger shelf dry, roof sound enough to wait out rain. Only the chisel scars around the lintel troubled me; they pointed inward like teeth. When our cart crossed the threshold, the entire facade inhaled. Shutters became eyelids. Counter slabs rose behind us, and the doorway narrowed into a mouth lined with broken survey stakes. The Quarrymouth Mimic does not imitate a chest or loose object. It imitates the promise of infrastructure: shelter, office, weigh station, powder room. Inside, its seams travel through walls and floor, letting it bite with the room itself. We escaped by throwing the ledger shelf outside. The creature lunged after its own convincing detail, opening the threshold long enough for us to crawl beneath the tongue-shaped counter.
Observed behavior
A Mimic remains perfectly architectural until valuable weight enters its threshold. It prefers carts, loaded animals, and groups sheltering from weather, closing exits only after the interior is crowded. The creature rearranges counters and walls to separate prey, then grinds material into appropriate compartments. It is possessive of details that make its disguise credible. Removing a sign, ledger, lamp, or official seal can provoke an early, poorly coordinated strike. Once exposed, it still refuses to leave its foundation and may bargain by returning stored objects through a drawerlike opening.

Chisel marks around a doorway point inward like several rows of teeth.

The Mimic cannot move beyond the original footprint; attack exposed seams from outside after drawing its tongue across the boundary.

Stealing or falsifying a key sign, ledger, or seal disrupts the disguise and causes mismatched parts to open prematurely.
