Hairpin Reaver

Field account

The Hairpin Reaver wore a surveyor's coat cut short at the waist and iron toe hooks polished by stone. Human enough from a distance, it had the wrong number of bends in each arm. Those joints let it reverse a blade without turning its shoulders, a useful trick in a lane too narrow for honest fighting. It waited inside the curve, struck our lead from above, then dropped past us on a rope already fixed beneath the road. By the time we faced downhill it was climbing behind us, using quarry spikes as ladder rungs. Reavers mark a switchback with angled cuts that look like maintenance signs. They are not directions. They describe the sequence of an ambush. Read from the bottom up, the marks show where the knife enters, where the victim turns, and where the body is meant to leave the road.

Observed behavior

A Reaver prepares escape before attack, fixing ropes below ledges and loosening route spikes for quick release. It probes with thrown chalk or a visible silhouette, then cuts whoever turns to follow. In groups, they pass a pursuit up and down the same hairpin until travelers no longer know which direction is forward. They value tools, maps, and toll tokens more than coin, and may bargain if offered a route they do not know. Cornered on open ground, a Reaver loses much of its confidence and tries to create angles with carts, packs, or fallen bodies.
