Levee Skiffraider

Field account

The Levee Skiffraider's boat was barely wider than his boots. He rode it standing, one hooked pole under an arm and the other hand trailing a blade through brown water. Improvised armor followed the levee's lines: packed-earth plates in rope frames, a high shoulder like a floodwall, rusted hooks at every seam. He struck our tow line, stepped from his skiff onto the rope, and crossed to the barge before either vessel had settled. One cut freed cargo; a backward pole plant returned him to his own wake. Skiffraiders may be human, once-human, or simply people shaped by too many seasons fighting the river. Their danger is practiced geography. They know which bank will hold, which flooded field is shallow, and which apparent escape channel ends against a hidden stone wall.

Observed behavior

A Skiffraider probes convoy speed, cuts a trailing line, and uses the resulting drift to isolate one vessel. Hooked poles permit sudden boarding, lateral movement, and retreat along rope. The raider bleeds or disables rather than becoming trapped in a prolonged exchange. Packed-earth armor absorbs glancing strikes but dissolves under sustained water. Crews communicate through oar taps and hymn fragments. Negotiation is possible before the first tow line is cut. Once a crew commits, blocking the hidden return channel is more effective than chasing light skiffs in open water.
