Hymncurrent Wight

Field account

The hymn came upstream before the Wight. Scraps of printed verse floated against the current, each circling a cold blue light under the water. Then the singer rose waist-deep where the channel should have been over a man's head. Wet grave-cloth streamed into the river without ending. Its face was a missing place behind a torn choir veil. When it drew breath, the whole oxbow inhaled. Skiffs turned broadside, ropes tightened to the rhythm, and everyone who knew the hymn answered before thinking. That answer put the current inside us. Knees bent with the next line. We broke formation by singing different verses at once, ruining the shared measure. The Hymncurrent Wight commands through participation. You need not believe the words. If your breath joins its cadence, the river counts you among the congregation.

Observed behavior

The Wight begins softly, choosing a hymn likely to be recognized and letting listeners join voluntarily. It then carries commands through the current's cadence, bends boats and bodies into ritual positions, and suppresses speech that breaks measure. It supports river predators by keeping prey still or kneeling. Competing verses, staggered breath, and drums played across the beat disrupt control. A Wight protects floating hymn scraps, but destroying them one by one may cause it to sing louder. Silence works only before the cadence enters the body.
