Gullet Lurker

Chewing came through a wall from a room that had collapsed years ago. Plaster bulged around a wet oval. Teeth came first. The rest dragged after the mouth, a huge unfinished body caught in its own entry. Floating glyphs tried and failed to square the opening.

It swallowed a corner. The remaining walls met at an angle no carpenter could have built. Each charge made the shoulders wider. We offered a narrow iron safe and slammed the door across the gullet while most of the body was still behind it. The mouth broke the lock. The shoulders couldn't follow. We escaped through the room that remained.

It waits behind a barrier for attention or noise, or for people to gather, to suggest an entry. Bites widen the opening; the body rams through after them. Compressed groups and closed rooms appeal because the space protecting the prey can itself be swallowed. In open terrain there is no meaningful inside to reach.

Once the shoulders have accumulated too much mass, it cannot reverse through the opening. Rigid frames or nested doors can hold the mouth ahead of the body. Deliberately changing the angles can trap it too.
