Gallowsvine Strangler

Webb went under the dead light pole to read a faded sign. The vines had made an execution tree of it. Red roots climbed the base. Black sap shone where thick stems crossed, and seed pods hung above like closed mouths.

A loop fell around his shoulders. Raising his arms tightened it. Another caught his ankle and passed the resistance back to the first. Thorn mouths opened underneath the stems and drank through his coat.

Cutting the loaded vine would have thrown him against the pole. We cut the thin red rootlets in the curb instead. The noose went slack.

Several plants share pressure signals through the soil. A high anchor holds the noose; low sensing roots tell it where to pull. Loops hide among cables and hanging signs or ordinary kudzu. Struggling tightens the first stem and wakes the others. Stillness makes the thorn mouths probe more cautiously.

The vines steer prey toward drainage depressions protecting the crown and seed the clay beneath their victims. A loaded stem recoils violently if cut. Support the person first, or sever feeder roots. The network retreats from salt-heavy soil and broad sheets of clean, sun-heated metal.
