Gallowsvine Strangler

Field account

The vines had dressed a dead light pole as an execution tree. Red roots climbed the concrete base, black sap shining where rope-thick stems crossed, and seed pods hung like closed mouths. Webb stepped under them to read a faded sign. One loop dropped over his shoulders and tightened when he raised his arms. A second caught his ankle, not to lift him but to teach the first vine where resistance lived. Thorn mouths opened along the undersides and drank through his coat. We did not cut the loaded stem; that would have snapped him against the pole. We severed the thin red rootlets spreading through the curb cracks, and the whole noose slackened at once. A Gallowsvine Strangler is not one plant. It is a judgment shared through soil, each hanging loop informed by every root tasting the victim's panic.

Observed behavior

The Strangler disguises its loops among cables, hanging signs, and ordinary kudzu. It chooses one high anchor and several low sensing roots before dropping a noose. Struggle tightens the primary stem and wakes neighboring loops, while stillness makes the plant probe cautiously with thorn mouths. It can redirect prey toward drainage depressions where the root crown lies protected. Cutting a loaded vine triggers violent recoil; severing feeder roots or supporting the victim first is safer. The network withdraws from salt-heavy soil and avoids broad sheets of clean metal heated by sun.
