Blacktop Wraith

Field account

At noon the empty frontage road looked liquid. A human outline ran inside that shine without touching the ground, its limbs shedding torn afterimages across the cracked lanes. The Blacktop Wraith passed our flank once to measure us. On the second pass, a strip of my sleeve opened and the skin beneath blistered cold, though heat rolled from the asphalt. We chased the figure toward an empty retail shell and watched it flatten into the tar shadow under a fallen sign. It came out behind the youngest of us. Blacktop Wraiths do not hold ground; they borrow every hot lane long enough to cut and leave. Their faces are hollows rimmed in road glare, their hands lengths of bone and fabric sharpened by speed. Break the continuous shimmer, and the ghost must rise where you can see it.

Observed behavior

The Wraith makes repeated shallow passes, learning who turns slowly and where the group leaves an edge exposed. It favors ankles, straps, and carrying hands, using each small cut to distort spacing. After striking, it enters tar shadow or heat shimmer and reappears along another continuous dark surface. Water, pale dust, or broad cloth laid over the road breaks its routes. A trapped Wraith becomes erratic, cycling through old running poses rather than defending itself. At dusk it loses speed and follows vehicle-shaped shadows toward any remaining warmth.
