Unsupported lantern
Nothing held the lantern above the floodwater. Beneath it stood a woman's outline with too many joints and rope loops falling from her shoulders.
She moved a hand. The skiff lines tightened around living wrists. Another gesture bent the flooded rows toward the light. Resistance slowed. Before the noose tightened, the urgency of escaping it had begun to leave.
The knot network
The hanging light is the center. The Widow knots loose lines through the site and turns the channels toward it. Cutting a rope can tighten a different one. The whole arrangement depends on the lantern sharing a vertical with its reflection.

Signs of its presence
A lantern hangs over water without a support. Drowned crop rows curve toward it against the grade of the land.
Unattended boat lines tie themselves into execution knots.

Break the reflection
Separate the lantern from its image on the water. Once they no longer share a vertical, the coordinated knots loosen.

Carry dry line
Clean rope dusted with salt won't take the Widow's wet seams. It can mark a narrow boundary to shelter behind.
