Quarry testimony
My teeth started buzzing before I heard anything. The road spikes shivered in their sockets. Between the cairns came something thin as antlers, its translucent chest opened into a frame. Bone pieces hung inside on wet threads, trembling at different pitches.
It opened its jaw. The quarry answered first. Then the scream went through the wall and my coat and into my body. Harlan fell without a mark. He kept clutching at a bell only he could hear.
We watched the clappers after that. When they drew inward, we dropped flat and struck stone against stone to spoil the pitch.
Tuning and target choice
Faint jaw clicks test the hard surfaces around a road. The Screamer marks a person with a private chime, then shapes a larger resonant zone. It tolls when bodies line up with the stone reflections. It seldom needs to come close.
Orders shouted aloud give it material. So does singing or striking metal. Soft irregular noise interferes with the tuning. Tangle the rib ligaments and it becomes frantic, retreating toward a fissure where rock can still carry the scream. A quiet interval may only mean it is preparing the next toll.

Tangled Clappers
Catch cord or wet cloth across the ribs. Sticky clay also keeps the bone pieces from joining in one toll.

Dead Ground
Move away from bare stone. Deep moss and loose loam absorb the resonance, as does suspended wooden flooring.
