Recovered natural history
What witnesses saw.
The field account preserves what witnesses understood before the encounter became doctrine. It is observation, not certainty.
Field account
The sound began below hearing. My teeth buzzed; iron spikes along the road shivered in their sockets; then something antler-thin stepped between the cairns. Its ribs had opened outward into a bell frame. Bits of bone hung there on wet threads, each trembling to a different note. When its jaw unhinged, the quarry answered before the scream arrived. The noise passed through the wall, through my coat, through the soft machinery of my body. Harlan fell without a mark and kept clutching at a bell only he could hear. We learned to watch the clappers. The instant they drew inward, we threw ourselves flat and struck stone against stone, spoiling the pitch. A Bonebell Screamer controls a road by making every surface part of its throat. Silence is not safety. Near one, silence only means the next toll is being tuned.
Observed behavior
A Screamer chooses ground with several hard surfaces and tests resonance using faint jaw clicks. It rarely closes on prey. Instead it marks a person with one private chime, shapes a wider zone through the quarry, then tolls when bodies align with stone reflections. It favors anyone calling orders, singing, or striking metal, because strong sound gives it material to bend. Soft, irregular noise disrupts its preparation. Once its rib ligaments are tangled, it becomes frantic and tries to retreat toward a fissure where its scream can still carry through rock.
Read the environment
The warning arrives before the creature.
Teeth and loose iron vibrate although the pass is windless.
Small finger bones hang from cairns on nearly invisible threads.
Spoken words return from the quarry in a higher, delayed voice.
Survival doctrine
Recognize the rule. Break the advantage.
These are field principles, not promises. The Rift punishes anyone who mistakes one successful answer for a permanent law.
01
Tangled Clappers
Thrown cord, wet cloth, or sticky clay caught across the ribs prevents the bone pieces from completing a unified toll.
02
Dead Ground
Deep moss, loose loam, and suspended wooden flooring absorb its resonance; draw it away from bare stone.
Recovered Field Plate
The sketch records its form. The surviving account records what it did.
01
Primary form
Antler-thin wraith, split ribs opened like a bell frame, jaw unhinged into a ringing oval.
02
Material detail
Bone clappers, threadlike ligaments, translucent gray skin, and small hanging fragments that tremble before the scream.
