Midnight ledger entry
At midnight the dead beacon turned inland. Its beam went through walls until it found a debt.
The Ledgerkeeper followed the light out of the tower. A lens for a face. Bronze ribs. The ledger stood bound through its spine. Wherever the beam fell, the ground divided into narrow lanes. To cross, a person had to surrender something named aloud.
Audit practice
It watches and assigns numbers before it separates people into lanes. Punishment comes afterward. Vague appeals anger it. Precise testimony can make it revise a judgment even after enforcement begins.
Precision is no guarantee that the ledger is right. Names are missing from it. Old fraud has been inherited as fact.

Use an authentic log or tag to correct the premise. Remains and witnessed names can also establish what the ledger omitted. You don't have to win its mercy to prove an entry wrong.

Split the signal
Irregular lightning or a deliberately mistimed beacon breaks up the lane geometry and divides the Keeper's attention.
